A Bit of Background

The idea for Christmas lights in Bissenberger Crescent, Kambah first started in 2000. In that year, numbers 47 and 51 led the charge, and three or four other houses in the area were lit up as well. As each Christmas has come and gone, more and more families have ‘caught the bug’.
Leading up to Christmas 2009, for instance, the lights were so many and so bright that visitors often said they didn’t need a map to find the area. They could see the cul-de-sac several miles away!
The Bissenberger Lights
Have a look at our new sister site “Christmas in Bissenberger“, it is schmick!
With over 50,000 lights decorating No 51 Bissenberger Crescent and more than 80,000 lights at No 47 alone, this is not surprising. Due partly to media advertising through radio and television, but mostly through word of mouth, visitor numbers have grown exponentially over the years. It is estimated Christmas 2009 saw on average 500 people every night in the week leading up to and including Christmas eve. In the last three years, the combination of cars, buses and small children has resulted in a decision by the organisors to close off the cul-de-sac to vehicles to prevent the possibility of an accident.
Interestingly, visitors in 2000 were mostly from the Canberra area with a few stragglers from NSW. Over Christmas 2008, besides regular Canberra residents who come every year, roughly 30% included interstate visitors from NSW, Queensland and even WA who had heard of the Bissenberger Christmas activity and had it on their list as a ‘must see’.
Fundraiser for Charity – 2010….Canteen
There are a few reasons why the Bissenberger lights are put on every year at considerable financial cost and effort by the neighbourhood dwellers.
First, the street festival of lights endeavours to raise money through gold coin donations for a worthy charity.
A big attraction each year in the week leading up to Christmas is the attendance of a professional barista who will be available to make the full range of espresso coffees. Hot chocolate and gelato will also be on sale with the proceeds added to the donations that will go to Canteen. The coffee bar will be open each evening between 20th and 24th December from about 8.00pm onwards.
Father Christmas Will be There
Another important reason for the lights is Father Christmas himself. Christmas would not be Christmas without the man himself, so watch this space for dates and times when he will be visiting No 47 Bissenberger Crescent.
This has become increasingly popular with the kids in the last 3 – 4 years. So much so that families are advised to come early to avoid standing in a long queue. Don’t forget to bring a camera or phone to take pictures of your loved ones talking to Santa
Come and Share the Christmas Spirit
The third, and perhaps most important, reason for the Christmas show is intangible. It has everything to do with promoting the Christmas spirit. Children are understandably excited at Christmas with its promise of toys and other good things, and many would say they are what Christmas is all about. However, the lights and activities in the cul-de-sac are aimed at more than just the children. The principal aim is to spread the joy and spirit of Christmas to everyone and that the goodwill shared amongst us carries on throughout the year, not just at Christmas.

Hi,
Just wondering if you will be doing your magical lights again this year, and if so, what dates ?
My family loves the tradition of coming to your street.
Regards
Danni
Sure are Danni, and we are rearing to go. Should flick the switch this weekend. Glad you love to visit, see you later this month!!
We drove past this evening in the hope the lights would be on and were absolutely delighted to see they were. We will be back for a closer look when it warms up as tonight was a bit too cold. We were very impressed – thank you!
